Client wins

DreamStart Labs (DSL)- partnered with Calcey at the start of the year to accelerate its product development. We were thrilled to see DSL being included in the Inclusive Fintech 50 and featured in the kick-off session at SEEP, the world’s largest international development conference. DSL’s products aim to digitize savings groups and bring financial services to underserved communities around the world. Calcey’s proud to play a role in bringing this vision to fruition. 

Nelly.com – a long-standing Swedish client, recently launched a campaign in collaboration with Bianca Ingrosso that brought a record amount of visitors to the popular e-commerce site. Calcey is excited to continue supporting Nelly.com as it looks to reach new heights following some strategic changes to the business. 

Helping communities and pivoting businesses fighting COVID

Fresh Fitness Food – London’s leading bespoke nutrition service, managing operations via an end-to-end workflow solution developed by Calcey, stepped up to provide meals to front line NHS workers battling COVID. FFF also launched a new product line – selling frozen food to changing consumer needs amidst lockdowns. 

Upflex – a longstanding Calcey client and a fast-growing network of flexible workspaces, launched Safe Spaces a new product to help companies keep their employees safe during COVID. Safe Spaces is currently enjoying high demand with multiple corporate clients already signed-up. 

Calcey is proud to have played a role in helping these efforts and ensuring service delivery as usual for all our clients during this testing period. 

Calcey featured in global tech events

Calcey was featured in the recently concluded Lindholmen Software Development Day. Gehan, our GM, presented some ideas for driving and managing technology transformation via remote teams – a timely topic given the forced shift to remote working that many businesses have experienced recently. Mangala, our CEO was a panelist at the Geneva Trade Week in September. He shared his thoughts on rebooting tech ecosystems post-COVID. Calcey was also part of an online panel – representing the Sri Lankan IT industry at the Oslo Innovation Week, last month. The panel focused on the unique strengths of the Sri Lankan IT industry and how it’s adapting to the challenges posed by COVID. 

Calcey organizes Colombo React Native Meetup

The second edition of the Colombo React Native Meetup took place in June with Eranjan, a Software Architect at Calcey taking the attendees through scaffolding for a React application. The aim of the session was to help the participants understand the basic architecture of a React application. The third edition of the meetup is happening today. Tune in!

Fighting the pandemic, our way

We trialed a limited WFH policy at the start of the year, allowing employees to work one day of the week remotely. As all infrastructure was set up to facilitate WFH we were able to shift to 100% remote work quickly and seamlessly. Over the last few months, we’ve organized various competitions and activities to keep the team engaged – shout out to Alex for sharing some tips to keep the team active and healthy! We’ve also donated 15,000 surgical masks to the College of Anesthesiologists for distribution among health care workers in Sri Lanka.  

New Releases!

The last few months saw several new releases including the launch of Asset, MotivatePT, 98 Acres and Deja Vu apps. Asset, an Andriod app, is a field companion for health workers to track patient data in Sub-Saharan Africa. MotivatePT connects users with fitness trainers in London. Calcey built an MVP for MotivatePT’s B2B product enabling corporate to offer classes to their employees. The solution manages class schedules, bookings, and payments. 98 Acres is a mobile app guide for tourists visiting Ella, a popular tourist destination in Sri Lanka, providing all the information they need to explore the region at their fingertips. Deja Vu is a location-based recommendations platforms for foodies looking to explore London’s bustling restaurant scene.

Client Visits

We’ve had several clients from USA and UK visiting our office in recent months to work closely with our team. Some visits revolved around onboarding as clients set-up our teams to work hand-in-hand with theirs, while others were design and discovery workshops to kick off new product development.

Calcey's visits London and San Francisco

Our CEO Mangala visited London and San Francisco to meet with our clients, partners, and prospects, kicking off our efforts to drive aggressive growth in these markets for Calcey in 2020. As a result of meetings held during this visit, we’ve already started adding personnel based in London and San Francisco to support our account management and sales functions. Stay tuned for more updates and we will be visiting again very soon.

Calcey's first webinar

We conducted our very first webinar on the topic “What technology stack should you use to build your mobile app?”. The goal of the webinar was to guide semi/non-technical founders through the process of selecting a suitable tech stack for their mobile app. Asela, VP of Product Engineering and Ganidu, a Technical Lead at Calcey conducted the session.

Calcey organizes Colombo React Native Meetup

Calcey recently acquired the rights for organizing the React and React Native meetups in Colombo. Our very first meetup took place with a full house of 250 participants. Premuditha, a Software Architect at Calcey took the attendees through the basic principals of React, with the aim of setting the foundation to tackle more complex topics in future meetups.

New additions to our management team

We’ve been on a hiring spree lately and also made some senior hires to our management team, expanding its capacity in line with our growth plans for the next few years. Gehan, formerly the General Manager of LSEG Technology – a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group, is now overseeing our operations as Senior Vice President – Professional Services. Ishara, formerly the Manager of Human Resources at Interblocks, is taking the lead in driving Calcey’s people strategy as our new Human Resources Manager.

Our team got a chance to rest and recharge at the end of a busy 2019 on our annual company trip. The team visited Habarana Lodge, a popular resort in North Central Sri Lanka, bordering a national park and lake. As always, it was a weekend filled with games, fun, and laughter. Special thanks to the organizing committee pulling off a great event. Here are some highlights from the trip.

Calcey partners the inaugural BreakIT SaaS Summit

Calcey in collaboration with Best of Sri Lanka partnered the BreakIT SaaS Summit, which took place at the Clarion Hotel Sign in Stockholm on the 2nd of October. The event brought together 400 founders, product managers, marketers, and engineers. The attendees got the opportunity to learn from the experiences of some of the best known SaaS entrepreneurs in Sweden. Calcey also took the stage, to share a case study about a successful enterprise SaaS product, built for a Silicon Valley client.

For the second time this year, a team of 3 from Calcey visited Sweden. Other than participating at the BreakIT SaaS Summit they attended a number of meetings with new prospects and also a networking reception held at the Sri Lankan embassy in Stockholm. It was a great opportunity to renew old connections and form new relationships. We look forward to visiting again very soon!

Calcey enters the Middle Eastern market

Marking a new milestone, Calcey entered the Middle Eastern market with the acquisition of a new client based in Dubai. The client is a venture capital firm managing a global portfolio of investments for high net worth individuals, family offices and companies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Looking back on our journey with imSMART

We recently produced a short video looking back on our experience with imSMART – an interactive mobile sales and marketing platform that is used by many multinationals today. It’s been a truly amazing journey helping to take this from an idea (conceptualized by one of our longstanding SV clients – Compare Networks) to a mature enterprise product used by thousands of enterprise sales staff around the world. We’ve had several clients visiting our office in recent months to work closely with our team. Here’s Joanna and Lucy, the creators of The Oneness Movement (TOM) who visited us a few months ago describing how they came up with the idea for the TOM platform and their experience transforming it from a concept to a product with Calcey. New Releases!

Last month Calcey provided an alpha release of the Fresh Fitness Food (FFF) platform, successfully achieving its 8-month delivery plan for revamping the FFF platform and backend tools. The team is hard at work right now working on testing the new platform and migrating legacy data, preparing to go-live.

Empowering youth with coding

Calcey recently partnered with the Karuna Trust to empower disadvantaged youth. Our goal is to create and support a full-time training program that would provide young people who had completed A/L’s, but not got selected to local universities, a foundation in IT and software development, preparing them to take up internships in software companies within 6 to 8 months. Calceys team gathers for an evening of Fun, “Paduru Party” style

One of the most popular events on the Calcey social calendar our “Paduru Party”- a musical get together and group karaoke session was held recently. It was a lively evening, that brought the whole company together for an evening of entertainment and good cheer. 

Attacks in Sri Lanka

Multiple explosions set off by a global terror organization rocked the country on Easter Sunday. The Calcey team and their families were extremely fortunate and unharmed in the incidents. As a country and a company this is our response – “Terrorism will not derail us. A few extremists must not be allowed to decide the future of a nation. We will continue with our work, with even greater resolve than before. Solidarity and resilience is the need of hour. We hope that global trade partners and tourists will continue to visit and do business with our beautiful island”

New releases

The last few months saw several new releases taking place including the launch of Crockfit an exercise app providing guided workouts designed by leading fitness influencer – Alex Crockford. Total Oneness Movement an online portal connecting practitioners with a range of self improvement teachers and guides ranging from personal coaches, spiritual healers, meditation and yoga teachers etc. also made its early beta release, just a few weeks ago.

Calcey opens new office

Calcey opened a new office in Battaramulla, a suburb of Colombo, in close proximity to the Sri Lankan Parliament. Coupled with Calcey’s headquarters in Sri Lanka’s leading IT and Innovation park – Trace City, this new development provides much needed space to house Calcey’s fast growing engineering team.

The last few months saw several clients visiting Calcey’s office in Colombo. Some visits revolved around workshops where clients worked closely with our team on key phases of their projects, while others were quick catch up meetings while holidaying in sunny Sri Lanka!

Calcey visits London

Calcey was in London during the first week of March to meet with new and long-standing clients as well as new prospects. Calcey’s roster of clients from London – which grew sharply in recent months – made it a busy visit. Grateful to our clients and partners who made it a memorable visit by opening up their offices, throwing parties and introducing us to their network!

Calcey year end party 2018

Calcey ended the year in style with a 007 themed bash that gave the team a welcome opportunity to let off some steam after a roller coaster year. The Calcey team dressed up as heroes and villains – embracing the theme of the night – wined, dined and danced the night away in true 007 style. Kudos to the organizers for throwing together a memorable bash!

Calcey at MWC 2019

For the second year in a row Calcey participated in the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, an annual event that brings together the global mobile ecosystem with a diverse audience of developers, telcos, investors and startups in attendance. This year the conference focused heavily on 5G and GDPR. Calcey didn’t forget to drop by 4YFN the startup offshoot of MWC and check out the latest emerging tech as well.

Calcey partners with leading multinational healthcare company

Calcey recently partnered with a leading multinational healthcare company – headquartered in Japan. The combined income of the company’s eye care business (in which its a global market leader) and the other business lines – which include precision GPS positioning systems and smart infrastructure – is in excess of a billion dollars annually. After the successful completion of a pilot project, a team from Calcey recently visited the client’s offices in US for a face-to-face kick-off meeting which included training on FDA compliance and related processes.

The Calcey team visited both East and West coasts in November for an on-boarding workshop with a new client as well as to catch up with current clients. Calcey’s Head of Project Management, Principal Software Architect and the CEO made the visit. Here’s the team meeting with Compare Networks – one of our long standing clients in the Bay Area.

Major releases!! Nutrifix, Crockfit and Upflex

It’s been a few hectic months for several teams at Calcey. Team MyBudget recently delivered, an early version of its next generation fintech software platform for consumers, working round the clock to meet tight timelines. The Nutrifix team introduced a host of new features including new premium functionality, discovery, search and a nutritional diary with a major release recently. Team Crockfit completed a beta release of its brand new guided workout app while Team Upflex launched the first version of its mobile app offering flexible work and meetings spaces to busy workers in New York.

Visit to Norway and Sweden

For the second year running Calcey participated in Oslo Innovation Week held during the last week of September. Following the Innovation Week events, Calcey visited neighboring Sweden to catch up with current clients and new prospects. Calcey conducted two seminars in Stockholm and Gothenburg, educating participants on pros and cons of sourcing tech talent remotely and the opportunities for locating extended software product engineering teams in Sri Lanka. Capping off a hectic two weeks in the Nordics, the Calcey team travelled back to Oslo to join events organized around the Sri Lankan Prime Minister’s historic visit to the city.

Calcey at AMNC 2018

Calcey’s CEO Mangala Karunaratne was part of the Sri Lankan delegation to the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting of New Champions held in Tianjin, China in September. The event was a gathering of global corporate leaders and change makers with the aim of sparking discussions and relationships for sustainable growth and collaboration.

Client visits

Our clients Ancon and MyBudget visited Calcey’s office in Colombo, to hold workshops, meetings and work alongside our team in the past few months. In between work, they also managed to find time to see more of Colombo and Sri Lanka and have fun with their teams. Halloween party 2018

The Calcey clan celebrated Halloween in style at our annual Halloween bash, this year. Great music, creative costumes, contests and prizes combined to keep the attendees entertained throughout the night. The prize for the best costume was hotly contested with quite a few eye-catching costumes and role plays. Click here for some great captures from the event.

Calcey Toastmasters Club inauguration

Calcey teamed up with Voice of Colombo, a popular Toastmasters Club to launch a Toastmasters branch within the company, with the aim of developing leadership and communication skills of employees. A 10 week ramp up program to train the first set of Toastmasters from Calcey was held and concluded in September. The Calcey Toastmasters Club now meets twice a month – and is always open for new recruits!

The Calcey crew took some time off in September for the Calcey annual company trip. This year the team visited the picturesque Aliya Resort and Spa located in close proximity to the famous Sigiriya rock. Team building activities, sports, music and lots of food and drinks made it a memorable stay at the resort. Here’s some highlights from the trip.

Calcey supports Disrupt Asia 2018

Disrupt Asia 2018 – Sri Lanka’s premier startup conference and innovation festival took place in Trace Expert City this year. Calcey’s lobby was the speakers’ lounge for the event, hosting many business and thought leaders from Sri Lanka and abroad who were part of the event. Calcey is proud of its longstanding partnership with Disrupt Asia, which has emerged as a key event for inspiring budding entrepreneurs and supporting early stage startups in Sri Lanka.

Farväl Andreas

After being seconded by Nelly.com – our client – to be placed at our office in Colombo and work alongside our team, Andreas took to Sri Lanka like a duck to water. He was instrumental in helping the Calcey team understand and familiarize themselves with Nelly’s processes and legacy systems. Always up for an adventure, he seized this opportunity to explore and learn more about Sri Lanka. After completing his tenure in Sri Lanka he’s now back home in Sweden. Andreas – you will be missed!

Partnership with MyBudget

Calcey signs partnership with MyBudget, increasing presence in Australia.

MyBudget is an Australian FinTech start-up and is one of country’s fastest growing brand names. MyBudget entered into a partnership with Calcey to digitize their offering of personal financial guidance via a suite of web and mobile applications.

Nutrifix goes live

Building on the success of the MVP developed with Calcey, Nutrifix launches their full product offering.

A London-based mobile start-up, Nutrifix, is a lifestyle mobile app that guides users to healthy meal options based on their location, nutritional needs and fitness goals. The app that has been garnering massive acclaim since its launch, looks set to change the way the world eats.

On-boarding Ancon

Calcey signs partnership with Ancon, further expanding its Swedish footprint. Ancon is a point-of-sale system used by over 1500 restaurants in Sweden. After initially engaging Calcey in a requirements elaboration exercise to develop their mobile app, Ancon have since engaged Calcey to develop their entire next generation product suite, working with an extended team to augment their in-house developers. Ancon have visited Calcey’s Colombo office twice for workshops, so far in 2018.

Calcey participates in Mobile World Congress and 4YFN in Barcelona

Mobile World Congress is the world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry. 4YFN is start-up arena and an annual gathering for the world’s hottest mobile app start-ups. Calcey were in Barcelona from 26th February – 1st March to participate in the event and soak up the latest in trends and technologies of the mobile world.

Sweden, hello again!

Calcey’s Mangala Karunaratne visited Sweden from 3rd April 2018 to 9th April 2018, as part of an initiative to add more momentum to the company’s growing Swedish presence. As part of the visit, Mangala addressed a breakfast seminar, attended by several high profile Swedish technology firms interested in setting up extended software development teams in Sri Lanka.

Seedstars Summit – Geneva

Sri Lanka’s Country Ambassador for Seedstars, Mangala, conducted a session on common issues related to UX during the Seedstars Summit, where the global tech start-up community come together to share their experience, skills and insights.

Upflex Business Portal

Calcey begins work on new business portal for Upflex. Calcey signed on to develop a platform that would seamlessly manage interaction between users and owners of Upflex’s network of co-working spaces. Upflex is fast growing in to one of the largest players in the co-working space market worldwide. As part of the agreement, Calcey is Upflex’s official ‘Global Software Development Partner’.

Calcey celebrates Sinhala & Tamil New Year in traditional style

Calcey kick-started work after the new year holidays with the full range of traditional sweets to celebrate the Sinhala & Tamil New Year. Decked in traditional clothes (or variants of it), a delicious Sri Lankan breakfast spread was enjoyed by one and all.

re:publica 2018 – Berlin

A festival on digital culture, re:publica is Europe’s biggest conferences around digitization and society. Calcey’s Mangala Karunaratne was among the participants, representing the Sri Lankan IT industry.

Calcey prepares for GDPR

A company-wide session for all employees was conducted to educate them on the responsibilities and risks posed by new regulations. A series of audits have been initiated to identify, minimize and mitigate risks posed by GDPR.
